February 2008 Featured Member: The Child Advocacy Center provides a child friendly facility that promotes a compassionate, multidisciplinary team approach to the identification, prevention, investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse. Services are provided to support the child and non-offending family members, as well as the Multidisciplinary Team of child protection professionals with the legal mandates to protect the child from further abuse. These services are provided while keeping the children’s needs and fragile state at the forefront of our minds. Q&A How long has this service been available to the community? The Child Advocacy Center has provided Multidisciplinary Team staffings since 1999 and forensic interviews since 2000 and therapy services since 2001. How do people access your services? Referrals for forensic interviews are made by law enforcement, Department of Children and Family Services and the State Attorney’s Office. Referrals for therapy, case management, and follow-up services can be made by anyone. Therapy is specifically for children and non-offending family members in which there was a verified report or indicated report of abuse. Are there any specific criteria for admission to your services? Children referred for forensic interviews must have a report of maltreatment to law enforcement and/or Department of Children and Family Services. Children referred for therapy must have a verified or indicated finding of abuse and can be past abuse/not necessarily recent. Children are served by the CAC for staffing, case management and follow-up in which there are reports of abuse and can be 0-18. Children referred for forensic interviews and therapy must be at least 2.5 years old and verbal. What general population do you serve? Children who are reported to have been abused ages 0-18. Is there a service you offer that the public might not know about? The CAC provides case tracking services in which we track cases throughout the child protection system and monitor the children’s needs throughout the system to ensure their needs are being met. The CAC also employs a Child Victim Advocate at the State Attorney’s Office who assists children with depositions, testimony and court appearances. The Child Advocacy Center has a child friendly facility for forensic interviews, therapy and case staffings. The Child Advocacy Center provides trainings in the form of an annual conference and ongoing training for Multidisciplinary Team members serving the needs of abused children. Does your organization have current volunteer opportunities? Yes, we need volunteers to assist with general office related duties, supervising children waiting for interviews or therapy sessions, assisting with case tracking, assisting with special events/fundraising and assisting with maintenance of our donor database. Are there any special upcoming events that effect your organization? The Friends of the CAC will be hosting two opportunities to learn more about the CAC and learn about how to become a Friend of the CAC on April 22nd 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. at Holy Faith Church Fellowship Hall and 5:00-6:30 p.m. at Savannah Grande.
